The Theatre

The theatre tradition in Coburg dates back to the year 1840. The advantage for the town after the referendum in 1919 which decided Coburg to join Bavaria instead of Thuringia is that Coburg preserved its Theatre. The Bavarian national goverment guaranteed the continued existence of the theater under the name of "Coburg National Theater". A house with an ensemble of its own, financed predominantly by the state, it offers all kinds of spectacles, such as operas, plays, operetta, musical, ballet as well as concerts - and it has remained the cultural centre of the city and the surroundings.
