Responsibilities of the University Computer Services Department

  • Providing every enrolled student with a computer user account, which can be used for email, registering for examinations, access to university computers, …  (Additional information on this page.)
  • Providing and monitoring the computer rooms in the Computer Services Department where students can work
  • Administering the server
  • … and many other areas that you will become familiar with during your studies.

User Account

What happens when I sign this application?
Your user account will be set up and you will automatically be given:

  • an email address: USERNAME@hs-coburg.de ,
  • access to ODi (online services which allow examination registration, registering for general elective courses, etc.),
  • rights to use particular software programs,
  • your personal home directory on the university central server,
  • access to the PC-laboratories in the Computer Services Department, as well as in other faculties and academic departments, and
  • a printer account.  Your printer account is used to pay your printing costs, and you can add funds to your account by using your “Mensacard” (electronic money card) on the terminals outside the Computer Services Department.

Another important note
When you turn in an application for a user account, you accept the stipulations of use of PCs at the university.  Please read these carefully.

How soon can I use my user account?
On the day after you enroll at the university, you can go to the internet address www.hs-coburg.de/freischaltung to activate your account and create your own password.  (Additional information regarding activating your account is on the application for a user account form.)


Use of Email

There is a mail button on the upper right side of every page of the university’s website.  Clicking on this button opens a web-based email program.  Many informative emails concerning your studies and events at the university are sent to all university email addresses.  Therefore it is helpful to read your emails regularly.


ODi Services

ODi stands for Online Dienste, which means online services.  It is a collection of internal services for university students and staff.  A user account is required to use ODi.  ODi can be accessed on every page of the university’s website by clicking on the ODi button (upper right).

ODi services include:
The Examinations Office
    selecting and registering for general elective courses
    accessing online grades

The Computer Services Department
    activating of your user account
    changing your password
    accessing your personal directory

The Library
    displaying your current account
    renewing / extending media you have already checked out
    reserving media (from our library)
    ordering media (from other libraries)


Computer Rooms and Opening Hours

Computer rooms are available in the Computer Services Department as well as in various academic departments.  A user account is required to use these computers.  Programs that are related to specific academic disciplines can be found on computers in the academic departments.

During the semester, computer rooms are often reserved for classes and cannot be accessed.  Student assistants monitor the computer rooms.

Use of Software

Students have access to a variety of Microsoft software products (MSDNAA software) and a virus scanner (Sophos) for university as well as for private use free of charge.  Information regarding the use of these products is available at the link Software.  When you activate your user account you will receive an email from Microsoft with access information and the license key.  Do not delete this email.


Printing

In most academic departments, printing is not free of charge.  Costs are paid through a printer account.  You can credit money to your printer account by transferring funds from your MensaCard (electronic money card) on one of the computers in the hall outside the Computer Services Department.
