About the university

What does “Hochschule Coburg” stand for?

Hochschule Coburg – University of Applied Sciences is a medium sized academic institution that differs from a traditional university focusing mainly on practical orientation. It was among the first universities of applied sciences formed in Bavaria and currently offers a wide portfolio of study programs in the areas of technology, management, engineering, social work, art and design and other application fields.

About the Program

What is the program about?

The Master of Engineering program is jointly offered in cooperation with University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, China which consists of four semesters and two summer school sessions including one practical external semester abroad. The objective of the program is to qualify students in methods and technologies in the field of instrumental analytics, measurement and sensor technology.

In what language are the lectures taught?

The lectures at Hochschule Coburg and USST are held in English during all the semesters. The students are required to take corresponding German, Chinese or other language courses for the duration of the program.

Will I be tested on foreign languages?

After admitting to the program, all students are required to attend a foreign language course and pass the test in order to be admitted to the next level and to do an internship.

Is there a study-on-the-job possibility?

For the students studying a semester in Coburg, study-on-the-job can be arranged and thus, allowing to work to some extend parallel with the studies, taking in account the individual situation.

What kind of degree will the students obtain upon completion of the program?

Successful students fulfilling the requirements of the Master program will become awarded with the master degree Master of Engineering from Hochschule Coburg. Additional there will be the possibility for chinese students from USST to obtain the Master of Engineering from University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. A double degree envisaged but still pending on Chinese authorities.

About Admission

What are the admission requirements?

To be considered for an admission, a student must have at a minimum:

-  Bachelor’s degree in the field of Engineering or in Natural Sciences with at least good or equivalent final grade

-  Proficiency in English to understand, speak and write on a master level (i.e. Unicert II, TOEFL 550, CBTOEFL 213, IELTS 6.0)

- At least one year of professional practical experience (exemptions can be made in certain cases)

- Successful participation in the interview process  

Can I be admitted into the program without professional practical experience?

Yes, certain exemptions are possible in cases for those applicants who have not yet completed one year of professional practice but they will have to fulfil this requirement - and submit a concept how to make it possible before starting to study - before graduating from the master program.

What kind of criteria does admission committee use to assess candidates?

The committees assess candidates based on academic achievements and seek in particular very motivated students with practical professional experience, excellent language and personal skills needed for succesful practical work in a foreign country.

What is the deadline for the application?

The deadline for application for the summer intake is November 15 each year. Deadline for winter intake is for German students August 31 and for international students July 31 because of the visa process. Students must fill in the application form on our website and send us the required copy of the application form along with all required documents before the deadline by post. Applications received after will not be considered.

What is the Institution code of the University for sending TOEFL official score?

Our institutional code number for TOEFL is 7450.

How long would it take for the admission to reach a decision?

After the deadline, the applications are assessed against the required criteria and the admitted candidates will be informed shortly afterwards by email.

Do you accept certificates/degrees written in a foreign language except English or German?

The university does not accept documents written in a language other than English or German. A student needs to obtain a certified translation and thus, we recommend to contact local Germany Consulate, otherwise, a professional judgement will not be possible. Students who apply at USST, will be able to submit their documents in Chinese at USST.

About Campus Life

Do students obtain the accommodation upon arrival?

The international office provides support with accommodation and some students are offered a flat in one of the residence halls, with private kitchen, bathroom/WC. The rent for apartments is at least for one semester (September to February and March to August). The rent is between 165 € and 195 € per month.

Is there any support upon arrival?

Yes, we provide arrival service assistance and students are required to inform us in time to have these services. We also offer an orientation week to the new students to obtain residence permit, insurance and other necessary items.

What kinds of activities are available to students?

The students are offered a wide variety of activities during their stay in Coburg. It is a lively mid sized town with rich cultural life. There are modern shops, cafeterias, restaurants and pubs that students can visit. For the sport activities, swimming pool, gym and tennis courts are also available.  

About Financial Information

How much is the Master in Engineering?

The tuition fee for one academic semester at Hochschule Coburg is 2,000.00 Euros.

What amount of budget should one have to finance cost of living in Coburg?

Apart from tuition fees, the students should budget around 600 Euros per month for accommodation, living costs, health insurance, books and other miscellaneous expenses. International students have to make sure that they dispose of at least 600 € per month at the Ausländerbehörde (Local government office for international residents).

Are there any scholarship funds available for the students?

Coburg University of Applied Sciences does not offer any scholarships to first year students. There are organizations in Germany which provide scholarships to outstanding students coming from abroad. Please visit these sites to obtain more information:
