Profile of the degree program

The sustainable use of our planet requires a switch to low-emission vehicles in the field of mobility. Would you like to develop environmentally friendly vehicles and the drive systems of tomorrow? The Sustainable Vehicle and Drive Technology branch of study in the Automotive Technology degree program will provide you with the necessary knowledge and methods from the fields of vehicle technology, mechanics, electrical engineering and thermodynamics.

You can help shape the transformation of drive systems and the mobility of the future.orange quotation mark symbol

During your studies, you will deal with environmentally friendly vehicle concepts – the spectrum ranges from low-emission cars to shuttles and e-bikes. You will also study the trends in drive technology – electric motors, batteries, fuel cells and regenerative fuels – in other words, the intelligent mix of climate-neutral drive technologies.

What we value

Strong practical and project relevance

The course is strongly practice- and project-oriented and therefore specifically geared towards the requirements of professional practice. You will work on the vehicle from the very first semester and work on several projects during the course of your studies, either alone or as part of a team. In addition, you will complete various internships in modern laboratories and workshops alongside your lectures. There are also specific projects with partners from industry, which create valuable contacts for starting your career. The strong practical and project focus of the degree program promotes your skills in project and process management as well as your teamwork and communication skills, optimally preparing you for the demands of the modern working world.

Join the CAT Racing team

A black and red race car, proudly emblazoned with Hochschule Coburg, zooms by on the track in front of eager spectators. Bearing the number 270, this open-wheel formula racer features a large rear wing and prominent sponsorship logos.

Students at the university design their own racing car to compete against teams from other universities in the "Formula Student" competition on international race tracks. CAT-Racing always achieves top placings. You too can become part of the team, prepare for your future career and, above all, have a lot of fun. Further information at www.cat-racing.de

Study internationally

Coburg University of Applied Sciences maintains relationships with numerous foreign partner universities. Students have the opportunity to spend a study or internship semester abroad. It is also possible to obtain a double degree in the Bachelor of Automotive Technology. This means that students obtain a Bachelor's degree from Coburg University of Applied Sciences and a Bachelor's degree from our partner university Tongji University (China). Further information can be found at: Studying abroad.

Course content and schedule

The regular start of studies is possible in the winter semester on October 1. However, you can also start in the summer semester on March 15 with an orientation semester on the Automotive Technology course. You can choose up to five modules from this module catalog including examinations. You can therefore already enjoy all the benefits of a student and complete almost a whole semester of study. The examinations you pass can easily be credited in the following winter semester – so you can start your studies with a noticeable head start. The orientation semester offers a flexible and gradual start to your studies and at the same time supports the compatibility of studies and career. It is also possible to attend courses from other degree programs during the orientation semester.

1st study section (basics)

In the Sustainable Vehicle and Drive Technology branch of the Automotive Technology degree program, you will learn the following basics in the first three theoretical semesters:

  • Automotive engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Mechanics and construction
  • Electrical engineering and electronics
  • Computer science and programming
  • Business administration
  • Project management

2nd study stage (specialization)

The second part of the course begins in the fourth semester. The internship semester, which can also be completed abroad, takes place in the fourth or sixth semester. You can therefore design your course of study individually.

In the two theoretical semesters of the second stage of your studies (e.g. 4th and 5th semester or 5th and 6th semester), you will focus on your specific branch of study.

Contents are for example:

  • Electrical drive technology
  • Environmentally friendly vehicle concepts
  • Thermal management for electric and hybrid vehicles
  • Regenerative fuels for combustion engines
  • Product development in the automotive industry

By choosing various compulsory elective modules, you can further shape your studies to a large extent according to your wishes. You can choose from the following subjects, for example:

  • Battery and hydrogen technology
  • Vehicle aerodynamics
  • Chassis systems
  • Strength simulation

The independent Bachelor's thesis on site or in industry is integrated into the 7th semester.

Practice during studies

Practical semester

You can complete the practical semester in either the fourth or sixth semester. It comprises a continuous period of 20 weeks in a company. Here you can put your skills to the test in industry on an interesting project and make valuable contacts for your career. You will also attend practical courses.

PraxisPLUS

Studying with in-depth practice (PraxisPLUS)

A degree course with in-depth practical experience (PraxisPLUS) offers the opportunity to gain up to 50 percent more practical experience during the course of your studies – without extending the duration of your studies. The prerequisite is a contract for work and services with a company/institution. Students can apply their knowledge from the lecture directly to their work. Work in the company is remunerated. This in turn makes it easier to finance your studies.

Cooperative study program (PraxisPLUS)

In the combined study program (PraxisPLUS), you combine the Bachelor's degree with a suitable vocational training, for example a Bachelor's degree in Automotive Technology with training as an automotive mechatronics technician.

This variant usually takes one year longer than the regular course of study, as you spend the first year exclusively in the training company and at the vocational school; you only start studying in the second year. From then on, you will spend the lecture period at the university and the lecture-free period as well as the practical semester at your training company.

After 2.5 to 3 years, you will take the final exam for your apprenticeship, but will continue to work for your practice partner. You will also agree the topic of your Bachelor's thesis with them. After 4.5 to 5 years, you will have a vocational training qualification and a Bachelor's degree.

Job & Career

A young man in a blue t-shirt holds a device, smiling in a workshop at Hochschule Coburg. In the background, two people work near a car surrounded by machinery and equipment.

Well-trained engineers are in demand worldwide. The automotive industry is a key sector with a high level of innovation. With your degree in sustainable vehicle and drive technology, you can develop the vehicles, vehicle components and drives of tomorrow at a vehicle manufacturer or supplier.
You are a specialist in the entire product development process, from the initial concept design for sustainable vehicles and drives to the simulation of a digital twin and computer-aided design through to testing the prototypes on test benches and on test tracks. You will also have everything you need to manage projects and lead teams.
The course is also an ideal basis for working as an engineer at technical testing organizations, e.g. TÜV or DEKRA.

Do another master's degree!

After successfully completing their Bachelor's degree, good graduates have the opportunity to gain further qualifications on a Master's degree course. Coburg University of Applied Sciences offers Master's degree courses in Autonomous Driving, Additive Manufacturing & Lightweight Design and Development and Management in Mechanical and Automotive Engineering as well as other technical degree courses. You can also find an overview of which Master's degree programs you can combine with your Bachelor's degree here.
