Career Path to a Professorship

Connecting Sciences for Impact

Teaching, research and knowledge transfer that make a difference

Professors are more than just teachers: they are mentors, coaches, and role models. They work with young people to develop ideas, skills, and solutions that are needed in the real world, and they implement concrete projects together with students and partners from business and society. In this way, they help shape the region and society and contribute to the university’s continued development.

In doing so, they combine teaching, research, and knowledge transfer into a meaningful and impactful mission: They nurture talent, open up new opportunities, and apply their expertise where it is needed. At the same time, they take advantage of the freedom to pursue applied research, engage in interdisciplinary collaboration, and test new teaching formats. A professorship combines multiple career paths into a single position—offering long-term prospects and meaningful work that truly makes a difference.

You are ready for a professorship if you…

Your primary responsibility as a professor is teaching. Would you like to train the young professionals of tomorrow and support them in their development?

As a professor at a University of Applied Sciences (HAW), you will devote approximately 18 semester hours per week to teaching.

But teaching means more than that: You’ll shape learning environments, refine teaching formats, and bridge the gap between theory and practical experience.

A doctorate is an advanced academic qualification that leads to the title of “Doctor.” It is typically earned through an independent research project and an oral examination.

In exceptional cases, a doctoral degree may be replaced by achievements equivalent to a doctoral degree—if your academic or artistic-creative achievements are recognized as equivalent.

A professorship at a university of applied sciences requires at least five years of relevant professional experience, including at least three years outside of higher education.

This experience demonstrates your ability to combine academic knowledge with practical application.

To become a professor at a University of Applied Sciences (HAW), you need to demonstrate teaching aptitude—for example, through teaching experience or practical experience in education and continuing education.

You can develop these skills in a targeted manner, for example, through teaching assignments or continuing education courses in university pedagogy.

Teaching is the central responsibility of a HAW professorship.

At Coburg University of Applied Sciences and Arts, we take an interdisciplinary approach and work in close collaboration with industry partners. Professors regularly collaborate with companies and institutions—both regionally and beyond.

Joint transfer and research projects, supervised internships and theses, as well as professional networks, enable solutions that have a tangible impact.

In addition to teaching, research, and knowledge transfer, you will contribute to academic self-governance by serving on committees, taking on responsibilities, and working to further the university’s development.

This requires a willingness to take on responsibility and a commitment to actively shaping the university.
