In July, Coburg University of Applied Sciences and Arts and BAYHOST brought together the international offices of Croatian and Bavarian universities in Coburg. The focus was on new ideas for exchange and collaboration—with the first concrete projects now set to be further developed.
Experts from four Croatian and five Bavarian universities exchanged experiences and discussed new ideas for cooperation. The meeting was a follow-up to the Croatian-Bavarian University Day held in Regensburg in 2025, where new contacts were established at various levels: from university administrations and international offices to academic representatives from all fields, ranging from the humanities to engineering. In 2026, numerous follow-up projects will be implemented, including the meeting in Coburg.
The meeting of the International Offices was opened by the president of Coburg University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Prof. Dr. Stefan Gast, who had previously participated in the 2025 Croatian-Bavarian University Day as a representative of Hochschule Bayern e.V. Coburg University of Applied Sciences and Arts already has several years of experience collaborating in the field of bioanalytics with the University of Split and the Mediterranean Institute for Life Sciences.
The discussion focused on topics that the participants had selected in advance, including staff mobility, short-term programs such as summer schools, internship exchanges through ERASMUS, as well as cooperation in areas such as research, technology transfer, and entrepreneurship.
The Croatian Catholic University presented two examples of best practices: the summer school “Practicing Resilience – Preparing for Recovery,” which focused on Ukraine, and the startup CAMP One Health 2026.
The participants discussed specific opportunities for student exchanges, including study abroad programs, internships, and summer schools in fields such as bioanalytics, robotics, design, cultural heritage preservation, education, and human rights. They identified numerous areas of common ground that will be further developed following the meeting.
Since 2023, BAYHOST has been placing greater emphasis on Croatia, a move that has been very well received by both sides. The experience gained from the ongoing collaborations has been extremely positive. Because Croatia is an EU member, all European funding programs for education and science are available. Nevertheless, the potential is far from being fully realized.
