Program Profile
In the bachelor’s program in Energy Engineering and Renewable Energies , you’ll explore the technologies that are crucial to the energy supply of today and tomorrow. This program focuses not only on individual energy sources but also on the interplay of the entire energy system: from the conversion of renewable energy through storage and electrical grids to its efficient use.
From the very beginning, you’ll combine theory with practice. Through lab work, exercises, and projects, you’ll learn not only how technical systems work, but also how to analyze, develop, and improve them. Step by step, you’ll build the engineering expertise you need to actively help shape the energy transition.
What We Value
Practical projects and working in teams

Engineering isn’t just learned in the lecture hall. That’s why exercises, lab work, and projects are an integral part of the program. You’ll work with real-world technology, conduct your own measurements and experiments, and apply theoretical knowledge in practical ways. For projects, you’ll sometimes collaborate with students from other degree programs and with industry partners. In the process, you’ll develop technical solutions, work as part of a team, and learn to present your results convincingly. Working in small lab groups offers you plenty of opportunities to try things out for yourself and gain hands-on experience.
Studying Abroad
Would you like to gain experience abroad during your studies? You can also spend a semester studying or doing an internship at a partner university abroad or at a company abroad. The International Office at Coburg University of Applied Sciences and Arts will help you plan and organize your stay abroad.
Course Content and Structure
During your studies, you’ll learn how modern energy systems work—from individual electronic components to smart grids. You’ll explore the conversion, storage, and distribution of energy and become familiar with various renewable energy technologies. First, you’ll build a solid technical foundation. Later, you’ll be able to choose your own areas of focus and delve deeper into the topics that interest you most.
First to fourth semester (foundation course)

Right from the start, the lecture series on Energy Technology and Renewable Energy will give you an overview of current technologies and issues. In the lab, you’ll have the chance to try out the material for yourself right away.
During the first three semesters, you’ll focus on the following, among other things:
- Renewable Energy and Laboratory Practice
- Direct and Alternating Current Technology
- electric and magnetic fields
- electronic components and circuits
- Electrical Measurement Technology
- Signals and Systems
- Digital and Microcomputer Technology
- electric drives and power grids
- Programming and Computer Science
- Mathematics and Physics as the Foundation and Tools for Technical Problems
In the 4th semester: It’s time to leave campus: During the internship semester, you’ll have 18 weeks to apply your knowledge at a company and gain your first in-depth experience in your future field of work.
Fifth to seventh semester (specialization studies)

Now, energy engineering is becoming even more specialized. You’ll deepen your knowledge in key areas of modern energy supply and learn to understand, design, and further develop complex technical systems.
Compulsory courses include, among others:
- Control engineering
- Electrical power distribution
- Electrical energy storage
- Intelligent energy systems
- Electrical energy conversion
- Thermodynamics
- Electrical drive and converter technology
- High voltage technology
- Technical English
- an interdisciplinary key skill
- an engineering project
In addition, you can choose five application-oriented specialization courses, allowing you to tailor your degree program to your own interests.
For example, you can choose from:
- Solar thermal energy
- Photovoltaics
- Fluid Mechanics
- Wind Energy
- Hydropower and pumped storage
- Hydrogen technology
- Battery technology
- Smart Grids and Decentralized Energy Structures
- Smart grids
- Automation Technology
- Artificial intelligence
- IT security
- Advanced programming
- Electric Drives and Power Converters
In the 7th semester: You will now complete your degree with your bachelor’s thesis.
Orientation Semester
Energy Engineering and Renewable Energy sounds exciting, but you want to find out first whether a technical degree program is really right for you? In that case, you can take actual courses during the orientation semester and get to know various technical degree programs.
Your advantages:
- Customized course schedule with modules from one or more degree programs
- Insights into the Content and Methods of a Technical Degree Program
- Opportunity to take exams and earn academic credits
- If you start your studies at a later date, you can have successfully completed modules credited toward your degree
During the winter semester, you can take courses such as Computer Engineering, Laboratory Practice, Programming, and the lecture series on Energy Technology and Renewable Energy, among others. Click here for more information about the orientation semester.
Practical Experience During College
Introductory Practicum
A basic internship before starting the program is not required.
If you have previously worked at a technical company or completed an internship, that is certainly helpful—but it is not a requirement for starting the program.
Practical Study Semester
The practical semester typically takes place during the 4th semester. During this time, you’ll work for 18 weeks at a company of your choice, giving you your first opportunity to apply what you’ve learned so far in a professional setting over an extended period. In addition, you’ll take courses that complement your practical experience and attend a practical seminar at the university.
PraxisPLUS
Would you like to work even more closely with a company? With PraxisPLUS, you can gain additional practical experience while you’re in school without extending the duration of your studies.
You’ll work regularly at a partner practice, apply the knowledge you’ve gained in school directly within the company, and be compensated for your work. This way, you’ll gain professional experience while you’re still in school and build valuable contacts to help you launch your career later on.
Jobs & Careers
Our energy supply is undergoing fundamental changes. Renewable energy must be reliably integrated into existing and new supply structures, and energy must be stored and distributed intelligently. At the same time, the power grids, mobility, industry, and heat supply sectors are becoming increasingly intertwined.

This requires engineers who not only know individual technologies but also understand how energy conversion, storage, electrical grids, and consumers work together to form a reliable overall system.
With your degree, you’ll therefore have many different career paths open to you, such as:
- Planning and Development of Energy Supply Systems
- Photovoltaics and other renewable energy technologies
- Battery Storage
- Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology
- Electric Grids and Smart Grids
- Electric Drives and Power Electronics
- Project Planning and Technical Project Management
- technical consulting
- Quality Assurance and Testing
- Research and Development
This will allow you to work for energy suppliers and grid operators, as well as for industrial companies, engineering firms, research institutions, and manufacturers of new energy technologies.
Curriculum and Examination Regulations
The study plan provides an overview of the structure of the degree program. The module handbook provides information on the content of the individual modules. The study and examination regulations form the legal basis of the degree program. Questions about the content of the course will be answered by the course director Prof. Dr. Bettina Friedel.
Go get a master's degree!
